1 June 1997 - +1 868 replaces +1 809
Area code +1 868 replaced the existing overall Caribbean/Atlantic code +1 809 in Trinidad and Tobago starting 1 June 1997 in permissive mode, and becoming mandatory 31 May 1998. Existing 7-digit subscriber numbers were retained.

There were rumours in the mid-1990s that country code +296 was being considered for assignment for Trinidad and Tobago. As far as can be determined, this assignment was never formally made, and the nation remains under the North American Numbering Plan.
